More Trouble With Words

Sign posted in my office building:

“Due to the rainy, but much needed, forecast, the office picnic will be moved to August 29.”

Really? The forecast is much needed?

Perfectly perfect

Just the four of us in the car. It was about 62 degrees cool outside, a bit rainy, and the feel of fall in the air. We had been in the car a while, felt hungry, and spontaneously stopped at a Chinese buffet we’d never been to.

We ate – GMan at sushi (3 helpings), Lucy and I ate our usual safety/comfort Chinese foods, and we all ate too many bought-at-Costco desserts. As we tried to let the food settle, we spent what seemed like hours going over the Chinese Zodiac, figuring out who was what, who was compatible with whom. The kids kept saying “Do you know anyone born in 1980? When was Dylan born? When was Uncle Terry born? Who was born in 1993?” so they could classify everyone they know.

I felt madly, wonderfully happy. I worry so much (too much) about GMan, and here he is, showing me up with how expanded his tastes are, how willing he is to try new things. YEAH!!! And Lucy, being so sweet as always, laughing, reading, willing to listen to anything any of us talks about. It was a routine, even dull, but absolutely perfect moment in our family’s life.

Hail, Holy Queen enthroned above

I have this group of friends – the main two are MM and MMac. We try to meet at least twice a month at a regular place and time – the three of us are always present, and others come and go.
We call it the “Triple M” club.

Recently MMac’s sister, AM has started joining us more frequently. We love her so much that we have renamed it the MMM-A Club. (Idiotic, yes, but it makes us giggle. Giggling seems to be one of our main functions.) We also have started grilling out once a week, usually just the four of us. It allows a very different sort of intimacy to exist when we’re sitting at a table, breaking bread and drinking wine. (We really do that – we like garlic bread and cheap red wine.) We’ve shared some deep and dark secrets, and never before have I felt so unconditionally loved. I mean, to be fair – they don’t have to be married to me – but that’s probably what makes it easier for them to love me.

Anyway, all four of us also happen to be recovering/ex-Catholics and the last time we met it was the Feast of the Assumption. We decided that it is now a necessity to also always meet on all Holy Days of Obligation. We are obligated to each other.

That Girl

I took Lucy shopping today. She is 8, about to start 3rd grade, and while she’s not a “pre-teen” quite yet, she is showing these amazing glimpses.

Browsing through the ad’s of today’s paper, she squealed “Ohmygod! I LOVE these shoes!” She took a Sharpie and made large black X’s over all the things she wanted. Then she did her hair in this intricate style that included a crazy part, a pony tail, and a braid on one side, tucked behind her ear.

She brought her purse with her, and on the way to the store she said “I have 65 cents in my purse. Oh, and my cell phone. You have NO IDEA how long it’s been since I’ve left the house without my purse full of diapers.”

We shopped, we had lunch together, we shopped some more. It was so nice hanging out with her and watching her change before my very eyes.

On the way home, I talked to a couple of friends on my cell phone. When I hung up, I glanced at her in the rear view mirror, and she was talking on her cell phone. (It’s a Snow White cell phone.) She hung up, and told me it was one of her kids (dolls), Anna, calling her to let her know that the other kid, Hannah, had used the potty chair. And then Samantha called to say that Morgan used the potty chair. Those kids!

So there’s my 8 year old kid – “obsessed with” (HER words) High School Musical, totally into creating her own style, and talking on her cell phone to her dolls. God I love her.

Reading Weekend

I had one of those fantastic weekends that was fantastic mainly because I allowed myself to read a lot.

First I read The Devil in the White City. It is two tales, both true, one set against the other. The background tale is by far the most extensive, and interesting. It is about the creation of the Chicago’s World Fair and the men (mostly) who created it.

The other tale is about a serial murderer who lived in Chicago at the time of the fair. I have read many mysteries, and also true crime books. This part of the book (interspersed throughout with the “White City” chapters) was gruesome, and sadly (surprisingly) had none of the intrigue of the building of the fair.

I was surprised at how much I liked the story for its Chicago history and the different architectural and design issues. I never knew I liked history so much.

Changing gears, next I read
Fun Home
I had heard good things about this book, and I love reading the Dykes To Watch Out For strips and books. If that’s what you think you’re getting, you’re in for a surprise. I was stunned by this book. First, I guess I’ve never thought about a cartoonist being a serious writer. This book is incredible! She conveys so much with her drawings, and in relatively few sentences she has written an amazingly deep, rich book. Themes! References to great literature! And so much of it was familiar to me – the era in which she grew up. The books she stumbled on and drank like an elixir when she realized she was gay (when she finally could name it). The way she lied, outright, and by omission, in her own journals. What those lies and omissions said about her.

Totally successful weekend.
